Psychoanalysis in praxis
My name is Ben French. I’m a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. My clinical training took place over 5 years at the Tavistock and Portman Clinic. I have a Masters and work as a Senior Psychotherapist in the NHS. I specialise in working with the under 25s. I’m licensed by the British Psychoanalytic Council.
Psychotherapy can be helpful for a diverse range of issues including depression, stress, suicidal thoughts, self harm, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, abuse, eating disorders, mood and personality disorders, bereavement, relationship difficulties, ADHD, issues around body image, gender and sexuality, OCD, tics, and phobias.
‘Young Adults Psychotherapy’ is a specialist psychotherapy service. It offers short and long term psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to 18 to 24 years olds. Sessions take place in Eastbourne and online. For those interested in psychotherapy for children and teenagers under 18 please see my children's clinic here.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is rooted in psychoanalysis. It works with the unconscious - the thoughts, urges and memories that are outside of our awareness but drive many of the difficulties that make no ‘rational’ sense to us. The phobias, depressions, behaviours, relationships and anxieties that bring us harm will have unconscious elements that keep them ticking along. Such difficulties often get ‘stuck’ in a painful loop and no amount of logical thinking or 'fresh starts' can shift them - for example we don’t binge eat, self harm or find ourselves obsessing at 3am about a ‘toxic’ relationship because we don’t know these things are not good for us. Something else is going on…
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy looks to bring meaning and understanding to our difficulties, whilst generating encounters with our own unconscious, that can shift our difficulties and return our lives to us.
Unlike therapies that take a ‘one size fits all’ approach, designating what is ‘normal’ and ‘not normal’, psychoanalysis recognises each person is a unique, singular individual and works to find, through increased understanding and insight into how we ‘tick,’ personalised solutions to our suffering. Lasting change.
